We actively encourage the development of environmental awareness both internally at CEMEX and in our neighboring communities by sponsoring lectures, conferences, training sessions, and other programs. We establish partnerships with community organizations, NGOs, universities, and other research institutions to promote environmental stewardship at all levels.
Since 1993 we have promoted public understanding of and support for biodiversity preservation through the publication of conservation books. The books are developed annually in partnership with leading NGOs involved in biodiversity issues, including Conservation International and Agrupación Sierra Madre, a Mexico-based NGO. We distribute these books to universities, government agencies, and research institutions to support their fundraising efforts.
One of our most successful initiatives is the El Carmen conservation area in northern Coahuila, Mexico. In partnership with Agrupación Sierra Madre and others, we are working to preserve this unique ecosystem and the hundreds of plant, bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species that depend on it for survival. El Carmen covers a total area of 75,000 hectares and is part of one of the largest and most biodiverse transfrontier conservation areas in North America.
